Asahi Breweries eyes India presence
Last updated: 27 July 2010
Japanese beer giant Asahi Breweries is
actively looking to establish a footprint in the Indian market, according to a
source. Asahi officials have been paying
frequent visits to India and have met with a range of producers of non-competing
products and potential distribution partners, a source close to the situation
told just-drinks today (27 July). The source's comments are consistent with local reports that Asahi has been seeking to enter India's
fledgling beer market via a joint venture or acquisition. All of Japan's major brewers are seeking to expand overseas in order to
reduce their reliance on a shrinking domestic market. Asahi Breweries has annual sales of
US$3.2bn. Earlier this year, Asahi struck a deal
with Carlsberg for the Danish brewer to
distribute “Asahi Super dry” beer in Hong
Kong and in Malaysia. Carlsberg already
distributes the beer in Russia and its India business is considered one possible
route for Asahi. A spokesperson at Asahi Breweries Tokyo
declined to comment to just-drinks on the firm's plan for the Indian market.
