UB Group to brew Heineken

Last updated: 14 July 2010

The UB Group is to brew the Heineken brand in India following the two firms' tie-up late last year.

United Breweries, the brewing arm of billionaire Vijay Mallya's UB Group, plans to begin brewing Heineken in India from 2011.

"We are aiming to start brewing Heineken locally at the start of the next financial year," a Heineken spokesperson confirmed to just-drinks today (14 July).

The move will help United Breweries and Heineken to compete more effectively in India's super-premium category against the likes of Peroni Nastro Azzurro and Foster's, which are sold by SABMiller in the country.

Heineken secured a 37.5% stake in United Breweries late last year, following almost two years of talks.

United Breweries leads India's fledgling beer market thanks to its Kingfisher brand. UB and SABMiller account for more than 80% of market volume.
